Childhood cancer, in addition to the challenges of the disease, represents an all or nothing fight, since unlike the case of adults, in children it cannot be prevented, what really makes the difference is the diagnosis Early and prompt treatment.
A relevant issue, considering that cancer attacks an average of 25,000 children in the world; In Colombia, according to the WHO, about 1,400 new cases are diagnosed annually, thus representing the second cause of death among children between 5 and 15 years of age.
This is due to the fact that the 72% cases have a low chance of cure, since on average it takes 15 days to make the diagnosis, not counting the days that elapse to start treatment, as argued by Yolima Méndez, director of the Interinstitutional Childhood Cancer Observatory.
According to the National Institute of Health, the types of childhood cancer that have been presented the most in the country are: acute lymphoid leukemia (46 %), lymphomas (9 %), central nervous system tumors (9 %), myeloid leukemia (9 %) and bone system tumors (4 %).
Although there is no cancer prevention plan for children, it is important to emphasize the importance of information and training for both parents and health professionals, in order to recognize the symptoms and pain that allow recognizing a possible appearance of the disease, in order to resort to analyzes that allow a timely diagnosis.
Today at BMI Seguros Colombia we join and accompany patients and their families who are going through this disease.
